Classical 5 Card Hands

Fig. 32    Classical Poker Hands

The pie chart (Fig. 32) shows the chances of getting various classical poker hands
when dealt 5 cards from a deck of 52 cards. The smallest slice (less than 1%)
represents the chances of getting one of a Royal Flush, a Straight Flush, a “4” of a Kind,
a Full House, a Flush, or a Straight combined.

Your chances of getting a Straight or better, when dealt 5 cards at random from a deck of 52 cards,
is less than 1 in 100.

                              Problem:
♦ What is the probability of being dealt a Pair or better
when dealt 5 cards at random from a deck of 52 cards?

                              ► Answer:
                                             ▪ The complement of “a Pair or better” is “Less Than a Pair”.
                                             Thus,
                                             P(a Pair or better) = 1 - P(Less Than a Pair)
                                                                             = 1 - 0.501177 = 0.498823 (approx.)
